Although it has been many years since I interviewed for a job, some tips stand the test of time. For example, according to this article entitled

50+ Best Job Interview Tips & Tricks That Get Jobs

preparation is crucial. Be prepared to both answer and ask questions. Researching the company and anticipating what will be asked by the interviewer are both beneficial. The article contains a substantial number of job interview tips, which I suggest reading to acquire knowledge. It is also beneficial for job seekers with disabilities to prepare from a disability perspective.

Preparation remains crucial for interviewees who have disabilities, just like for those without. As

this article about discussing reasonable accommodations during a job interview

points out, an interviewer typically cannot inquire about an applicant’s abilities or health unless it pertains to essential functions of a job. I recommend that a job applicant with a disability prepare for the job interview by focusing on what, if anything, the person would like to disclose during the interview about a disability. As this article from

job-search site Monster

suggests, it may be best for disabilities which are not obvious to not be disclosed during the interview phase. However, the article referenced at beginning of this paragraph recommends disclosing an obvious disability. Ultimately, what disability-related information to disclose and when is the decision of an individual with a disability. The remainder of my article contains final thoughts regarding a job interview.

Whether you have a disability or not, focus on what you can do. As stated in the article I referenced above containing

job interview tips

focus on what you bring to the company and relevant skills (tip 28). It also helps to demonstrate a willingness to improve (tip 29). Last but certainly not least, remain polite and truthful during the job interview (tips 23, 48 and 50). Next month, I switch gears from employment to technology. February’s topic will be assistive technology 101.
